Vessel censorship & verification directive

A nationwide directive requiring registration and verification of all marine vessels and craft operating in Nigerian waters.

Why this matters

In response to rising illegal oil bunkering and sea piracy threatening national security, revenue, safety, and the marine environment, TUBAVS has issued a nationwide directive requiring every marine vessel and craft in Nigerian waters to be registered, verified, and brought under stricter control, in support of the Federal Government and security agencies.

Issued pursuant to the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act, 2019.

Who must comply

All seagoing vessels and craft, including:

Tankers

Barges

Tugboats

Fishing vessels

Workboats

Houseboats

Service boats

Landing craft

Patrol craft

Documents required

Unique vessel ID

Each verified vessel receives a UVIN, marked visibly on bow and stern.

Timeline

90 days to verify. Runs 15 Aug – 30 Nov 2026.
